When I was not yet ten years old, one of the older children who belonged to the local youth group was being examined for a national heritage badge. I had skipped grades, I knew things. Thinking to help, when the question came up of who had been the country's first leader, I sagely whispered, "George Washington!"

I had learned some pieces of history in school, this and that patriotic fact, but in the end it seemed they could not compete with what I learned from radio and television and the movies.

This, too, is one of the faces of cultural genocide.
