It seems the type of film is important, for special effects to be considered an issue.

"Everyday" and mythic stories can both be told through everyday "life"-type films and through the magic realism - SF/F spectrum; but special effects only factor into the latter. The further a story skews away from what most would consider to be the "normal" everyday, the more special effects come into a story ... and perhaps the less the story is accepted for its own sake, independently of those special effects.

Miracles, it seems, are somehow less accepted for themselves where they can be dismissed as mundane coincidence.
