The only valid definition I can find for what constitutes a "right" action: was it the action I would have taken at the time, given what I knew at the time; and also given that I had made all reasonable attempts not to shut my eyes to then-accessible and relevant knowledge?

Second guessing and "what-if's" are meaningless except as learning experiences ... but learning experiences can be extremely valuable. Not least, they provide an updated knowledge-context for future actions.
