When a subordinate political entity which considers itself oppressed becomes independent, the first thing it does is to justify any and all actions taken to achieve that independence.

The second thing is to write its constitution so as to ensure that no subordinate part of it can legally declare its own independence, or undertake actions to that end.


Smile of the day:

When Sweden decided to change the traffic laws such that vehicles henceforth would drive on the right side of the road (formerly it was on the left), the committee in charge decided it would be most efficient to make the change progressively. In the first year trucks and heavy vehicles would be required to shift to driving on the right hand side. The following year it would be buses and light vehicles that would shift over to follow this rule.
