From Why can't the teachers ...?

Why can't the teachers teach their students how to think?
This grade point average focus has brought us to the brink
Why, if you thought like them instead of the way you do
You might be legislating students too.

An academic's past rote learning absolutely classifies him
The moment he speaks he makes some other clerk despise him
One common parrotting we shall not ever get, so
Why can't the teachers
Why can't the teachers learn to

Set a good example for students who will not engage their mental gears?
The high and the middle schools leave you close to tears
There even are places where thinking completely disappears
In the universities they haven't seen it for years ...

Why can't the teachers teach their students how to think?
Conductors know their passengers, the plumber knows his sink,
The secretary knows each keyboard key from A to Zed
The secretary doesn't really care what the appointment is actually, as long as it's typed in correctly ...

The tailor knows his needle, hairdressers know their braids,
The union knows its labour, the craftsman knows his trade -- but
Bring up thinking in a classroom, you'll be raising a big stink
Oh why can't the teachers
Why can't the teachers learn ... to think?
